Abstract EN

This paper examines the way meaning is produced based on the German theorist Wolfgang Iser’s Reader Response theory, a theory which gained prominence in the late 1960s, that focuses on the reader or audience reaction to a particular text.

Iser argues that a literary work is not a finished product nor is the reader a passive recipient of information in the text.

The reader, instead, is an active agent in creating the meaning of a literary work.

Due to the fact that a text is composed of a written portion and an unwritten one, the unwritten portion, or what Iser calls « gaps », calls for the reader's participation.
