Abstract EN

This study sheds light on important aspects of the life of Murad III, the twelfth sultan in the Ottoman Empire, who ruled in the period (982-1003 AH / 1574-1595 AD).

These aspects are represented firstly by showing the biographical background, and the most significant historical aspects of his life; then by addressing his widespread portraits in the Ottoman manuscripts, especially those displaying his close relation with books: out over other sultans, he has a lot of paintings holding a book in his hand, sometimes sitting in his library reading some books, other times looking at books specially-written-and-drawn for him, or books presented to him as gifts from foreign ambassadors, Studying these miniatures with their artistic and temporal variety aims at explaining the reasons behind his sole relevance to such apparent concern on one hand, investigating his both physical and sensual characteristics through these printed portraits on the other hand, and showing how the artist was able to reflect Murad's most important traits in a way distinguishing him from other sultans and contributing to record his later undated paintings.

, the very facial details, Also, it aims at identifying his special physical attributes, presenting accurate description for the names, shapes and types of his headgear "turban" and his clothes; his personal tools, and identifying his special companions in his private councils through the study portraits, which make the study contribute to reconsidering the method of studying the art of personal photography in the Islamic era, and that the method of describing the depictions of historical figures (such as: sultans or others from different social levels) is no longer restricted to their description according to the general shape only, but there are a lot of other details involved in their personal depictions, which can add novel information about their physical and sensual traits (such as depicting Murad the third as always "a reader and lover of books, a storyteller and a narrator of his sleep"), and explaning the reasons behind this by addressing his historical biography.
