Abstract EN

The research aimed to study the economic role of the agricultural sector and to indicate the percentage of its contribution to the domestic product and to estimate the volume of investments directed to it compared to other sectors, as well as to identify the role of the agricultural sector in providing new job opportunities that go along with the population increase and its role in foreign trade during the period (2005-2020).

the most prominent results were : the increase in the value of the private GDP compared to the value of the GDP of the public sector, where the participation rate of each reached 65.5% and 34.5%, respectively for the average study period, and the contribution rate of each of the agricultural and other sectors was about 12.4% and 87.6%, respectively.

it was also shown that the percentage of investments directed to the agricultural sector was insignificant, as it amounted to 4.2% of the average total investments, while the percentage of investments in other sectors reached 95.8% for the average period.

it was also shown that the percentage of employment in the agricultural sector in relation to total employment decreased from 27% to 20% in the year the percentage of agricultural employment in relation to the population decreased from 7.2% to 5.2% in 2020, and therefore the population increase is not commensurate with those working in agriculture, as it was shown that the number of people under the poverty line increased from 13.7 million to 30.3 million in 2020.

the contribution of agricultural trade to the total foreign trade was 8.8% for the average study period.

the research recommended the need for the state to adopt effective policies for family planning to reduce population growth, encourage investment in the agricultural sector and redistribute investments to different sectors to achieve economic efficiency by reducing the interest rate on loans to develop agricultural projects and provide support for the agricultural product in light of the environmental, climatic and economic changes that it directly affects agricultural production
