Abstract EN

Honey has nutrition and medical importance.

bees contribute to the pollination of many agricultural crops, which leads to higher productivity.

the honey production projects are characterized by the low capital needed to start the project compared to other agricultural projects, as well as turnover of capital is fast.

the research problem was the decreasing of bees and beehives numbers and consequently decreasing of the total production of honey at the level of Sharkia governorate and Egypt in general.

accordingly, the objectives of the research were to assess the current position of the productive variables of honey, estimate indicators of economic efficiency, estimate the production that minimizes cost and achieves the optimum scale, and finally identify the productive problems facing honey producers and their proposals to overcome them.

to achieve the research objectives, secondary data were collected from the economic affairs sector of the ministry of agriculture, as well as raw data obtained from a sample questionnaire from the Sharkia governorate.

the most important results were as next : the annual decrease in both of the beehives and production in Sharkia, which was respectively about 4.27 thousand, 10.36 tons.

the net return per kilogram of honey and the producer's incentive, respectively were around 28.47 pounds, 55%.

estimating the honey production function indicates the importance of the number of beehives, the amount of sugar used, the degree of beekeeper experience and the transfer times of bees.

finally, the production that minimized cost was found to be about 18.29 kg per beehive annually, and the number of beehives that achieve the optimum scale was 102 beehive.

the most important problem of bees breeding was the spread of diseases and the spread of date wasp, with ratio of 29.17% of the problems faced by the owners of the bees.
