Hadhramout governorate is characterized by its large area; it constitutes 30% of the area of Yemen (524 thousand km2).

the shape of the extension of the land surface in the governorate had spatial characteristics that explain the concentration of the population in limited areas, and the existence of a population void in large areas; where natural barriers (highlands and deserts) prevented urban contact.

and In addition to the shapes of the land surface, there are other factors that contributed to the distribution of the population, the most important of which are: population growth trend, water and agriculture, the prevailing industries crafts, trade and services, and the transportation network, in addition to the religious factor.

This had an impact on the distribution pattern of the population, and in determining the directions of their spatial spread.
