The contextual surprise in the Qur’an is a surprise that the reader of the Qur’anic text understands from the context of the ongoing dialogue between the sender and the addressee, or between the speaker and the addressee.

this surprise, unlike the verbal surprise, does not contain words indicating surprise or its equivalent.

the reader and listener of the Qur’anic verses realize this kind of surprise in the Qur’an’s discourse from the context of the verses, which we often see in the Qur’an within the different methods of statement, including the style of verses that start with the circumstantial word “Lamma” or include it.

this word in its structure and meaning does not indicate surprise, but rather the context of some verses that contain this word and this method of elucidation confirms the existence of the meaning of surprise in it.

in this article, we have studied the verses that contain the letter "Lama" to show locations that this word contains the meaning of surprise and the purposes for which this surprise is intended and reflected on the recipient, using the descriptive-analytical method.

this research reached the conclusion that the word “when” when its answer is combined with the word “the saying” and its derivatives in the words of the polytheists and hypocrites, or when its word is combined with the emotion “Fa” most of the time contains the meaning of surprise.

this surprise intends several purposes in its essence; some of them are related to feelings of pleasure, contentment and comfort in following the commands of god, and others are related to feelings of pain, sadness and sorrow, refusing to accept his commands and doing what god has forbidden and forbidden.
