Abstract EN

This paper has examined the role which reference plays in the textual coherence of al-Hujurat chapter (the holy Qur’an) as it is one of the means to achieve textual features.

to that end, the researcher has defined the concept of reference and classified its types.

then he has highlighted its contribution to the shaping of the structure of the topic of the text.

after that, the researcher moved to present a conceptual framework based on modern theoretical studies which have addressed the functional role of reference in textual coherence.

in the light of this examination, the researcher has highlighted the value of modern textual studies in drawing up a more realistic picture of the text in comparison with the classical studies.
