Pierre Michon’s Corps du roi : pagan hagiographies

Abstract EN

Literary criticism in France experienced a new boom with the publication of Sur Racine (1963) by Roland Barthes.

This author was recognized as the initiator of a new form of criticism, transforming the literary essay into a unique genre.

We read in Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes (1975): “the essay is almost a novel: a novel without proper names”.

In 2002, Pierre Michon published Corps du roi, a set of five essays in which he wrote the biography of writers such as Samuel Beckett, Gustave Flaubert and William Faulkner, among others.

The path had been traced by Roland Barthes, it was just necessary to follow it, and Pierre Michon erases the adverb almost and adds proper nouns in his essay.

Because he is the author of and character in his biographies.

Pierre Michon, using the Christian theme of the resurrection, likes to take people who have existed and bring them back to life.

Lives, he says, have an ancient tradition in the West and are distinguished from biographies by highlighting supernatural traits that feature even more prominently in hagiography.

In addition, this genre helps to recreate an interior life that has not been witnessed.

It is from the concept of the king’s two bodies that Pierre Michon distinguishes in his work the mortal body of writers from the eternal body of literature.

So we will analyze in this article how Michon shows how these writers became Great Authors.

To do this, we will comment on the function of hagiography in Michon’s works, as well as its connection to the author’s narrative brevity.

Finally, we wish to emphasize the construction of this literary genealogy that Pierre Michon creates for himself and to include Corps du roi in a critique of writers which in France has its roots in Impressionist criticism.

La critique littéraire en France a connu un nouvel essor avec la parution de Sur Racine (1963) de Roland Barthes.

Cet auteur est reconnu comme l’initiateur d’une nouvelle critique, en transformant l’essai littéraire en un genre singulier.

On lit dans Roland Barthes par Roland Barthes (1975) : «l’essai s’avoue presque un roman : un roman sans noms propres».

En 2002, Pierre Michon publie Corps du roi, ensemble de cinq essais dans lequel il écrit la biographie des écrivains comme Samuel Beckett, Gustave Flaubert et William Faulkner, entre autres.

Le chemin avait été tracé par Roland Barthes, il fallait juste le suivre, et Pierre Michon efface l’adverbe presque et ajoute dans son essai des noms propres.

Car il est auteur et personnage de ses biographies.

Pierre Michon aime se saisir des personnes qui ont existé pour leur redonner vie.

Il se sert pour cela de la thématique chrétienne de la résurrection.

Les vies, précise-t-il, ont une tradition ancienne en Occident et se distinguent des biographies en mettant en exergue des traits surnaturels, une caractéristique davantage flagrante dans l’hagiographie.

En outre, ce genre de récit permet de recréer une vie intérieure qui n’a pas eu de témoin.

C’est à partir du concept de deux « corps du roi » que Pierre Michon distingue dans son ouvrage le corps mortel des écrivains du corps éternel de la littérature.

Ainsi nous analyserons dans cet article la façon dont Michon montre comment ces écrivains sont devenus de Grands Auteurs .

Pour cela, nous commenterons la fonction de l’hagiographie dans l’œuvre michonienne, ainsi que son lien avec la brièveté narrative de l’auteur56.

Par la suite, nous souhaitons mettre l’accent sur la construction de cette généalogie littéraire que Pierre Michon se crée et inscrire Corps du roi dans une critique des écrivains qui en France trouve ses racines dans la critique impressionniste.
