Ayred is a festive event, a carnival of masks and disguises, an open sky theater that features one of the folk’s rituals still practiced exclusively in the mountain villages of Beni Snous in the Tlemcen region.

These villages, mainly agricultural, have preserved the living tradition of some cultural rites, linguistic heritage, practices, and knowledge, including the ceremony of Yennayer.

Yennayer is an agricultural festival that highlights food security, self-sufficiency, social solidarity and other traditions that are intimately interwoven with the social demands for sustainable development and peaceful coexistence with nature.

The region’s topography contains natural aspects that, when combined with historical, human, and economic data, shape the Senoussi man’s identity, and makes his popular literature inextricably related to what his land has to offer.

The inhabitants of Beni Snous express their often-oral literature in a ritual that reveals intimate relationships between the good and the bad, in addition to the fear.

Therefore, Ayrad, a lion under the human shape, gives a meaning to this symbol that becomes a reality.

The celebration also involves a series of preparations made by many social strata: women, men, the elderly, young people, and children, in this event that brings together concrete solidarity mechanisms and tools for conveying oral history in order to develop social ties.
