Although the Mediterranean basin is small compared to the other water bodies on the planet, its geo-political site, the maritime straits it possesses and the civilizations that arose on its banks gave it great international importance.

It has been and continues to be home to a variety of races, religions, languages and cultures that the sea contributed to mixing them through migration, trade, cooperation or conquest.

The newly discovered energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean have led to a change in the energy map and energy security policies of the Mediterranean countries.

The growing geo-economic significance has also increased the importance of the basin over the global chessboard.

This incited major non-Mediterranean countries to channel their investment into the region.

China with its “Belt and Road” Initiative is the most prominent.

The accelerated rise of Chinese trade in the region through the establishment of agricultural and maritime strategic alliances with southern Europe countries on the one hand, and the displacement of some European Mediterranean countries from the forefront of trade with some Arab Maghreb countries, make the Chinese presence a real threat to the inter-Mediterranean trade.
