The semiotic is one of the most important critical approaches in the modern era, and plays a distinct role in cognition due to its constant craving for the meanings underneath the signs with both linguistically and non-linguistically sides.

its prevalence in contemporary studies and its openness to all cultures is a solid evidence of its effectiveness and efficiency for its origins derive from a wide range of disciplines such as logic, philosophy, linguistics, psychoanalysis and anthropology.

for that reason, the author aims to examine the origin, historical and philosophical roots that contributed in shaping the current semiotic approach.

the author shall examine the significance and usage of the term semiotics in ancient thought, especially of Greek civilization, the roman legacy, and ending with the Arab heritage.
