Abstract EN

This study discusses the contributions of the Arab critical discourse in consolidating poetic contradiction both in form and function, and to what extent the textual work responds to the firmly-established critical contradiction in selected models of classical and modern poetry.

This study comes in three sections.

The first deals with establishing the originality of contradiction linguistically.

The second section addresses establishing originality of the contradiction in the critical discourse.

The third section describes attempts of application.

The study findings showed that the bases of the poetic contradiction in Arabic criticism constitute a shift in the textual directions from the familiar structures creating a state of reader's expectation abrupt intervention, thus resulting in a state of balanced interpretation.

This makes the text acceptable to multiple readings, showing not only meaning and its opposite but also contradiction's role in deepening the poetic image, and revealing the suggestive connotations of the text.

Contradiction is also considered as a tool for expressing the poet's psychological state and feelings.
