Modern critical studies turned their attention to the reader since reading is considered a self-activity that ends in understanding the meaning and comprehending the structure of the literary text and what surrounds it.

this is termed as paratext or parallel texts which depends on semiotic techniques since it is the most relevant approach.

moreover, it is based on the structural analysis, both cognitively and aesthetically.

the latter enables the reader to delve into the functions and communicative abilities of the text in order to interpret them, including relaring the paratexts to the narrative text in the novel of elias khoury, especially the cover, the title and the author's name.

based on this we raise the questions of how did the paratext appear in the novel "Yalo" ? and what and how are they related to the text of the novel ?.
