Abstract EN

“Mental health” is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” as defined by the world health organization.

mental health is not merely the absence of mental disorders, but rather a state of wellness in which each individual is able to realize his or her own potential and cope with stressful situations.

work in a productive and useful manner and contribute to the local community.

and since the university stage, especially the first year of university, is the transitional context and a key moment in the prevention of psychological and mental health at a later time.

in this field study that we conducted on a sample of students from the university of Algiers 2-Abu al-Qasim Saad Allah-we decided to study the variables that can enhance or threaten the mental health of these students, as first-year students are exposed to stress and pressure due to difficulties in adapting to the university and the new responsibilities that they must they do it as adults.

despite the occurrence of many psychological and behavioral problems (depression, introversion, anxiety, violent and aggressive behaviors, psychological conflict, addiction, eating disorders ...) and their increase in this age group, studies on the mental health of first-year university students it does not receive the necessary attention in Algerian society, and remains rare, rather descriptive than explanatory.

hence, this field study came to try to research the most important sociocultural variables that affect the mental health of the new university student.
