Since its independence, Algeria has worked to perpetuate the basic principles of human rights, respect for human dignity, and strip punishment of all physical or moral violence through its official legislation, foremost of which is the constitution and the prison regulation law, the latter of which relied on modern international principles in the field of treatment of prisoners approved by the united nations.

the united nations convened in Geneva on August 30, 1955, which added a human dimension to the activity of the punitive administration and made prison a tool of reform and treatment within the framework of respecting the basic rights of prisoners.

as a result of this post-care for the social reintegration of prisoners, state agencies, and civil society contributes to them, undertake to take care of the prisoners' welfare and help them reintegrate through national associations and positively intervene in the development of the prison system.
