Abstract EN

This paper aims to explain the meaning of hospitality to the stranger according to Jacques Derrida.

it has been divided into an introduction and two sections.

the first section revolves around the concept of hospitality to the stranger according to Derrida and the motives for the concept’s transition from place/value to culture.

the second section deals with the practical side of this concept in his book monolingualism of the other and in his view of translation as a means of multiplicity and difference.

the paper concludes a set of results, most importantly that Derrida looked closely at the linguistic and cultural aspects of hospitality to the stranger.

he defined it as : an acceptance, an admittance, a reception, an approval, a give-and-take, and a welcoming.

he arrived at a conclusion that hospitality is an acknowledgment of the other’s right to be different.

Derrida sought to deconstruct the haughty western self which saw itself as the center of the universe; and thus, Derrida's article was considered a call for a new universal reformulation of humanity, based on hospitality.

the paper also concluded that Derrida's book monolingualism of the other came as an applied model for hospitality within the language of others.
