Abstract EN

This paper investigates and analyzes the history of forests in Algeria and the most relevant French legal texts related to forestry in the second half of the 19th century.

this forest wealth has received significant attention since antiquity because of its importance.

this study, therefore, aims to focus directly upon the significance of this forest wealth in Algeria and particularly in the region of Souk Ahras.

this latter enjoys diversified forest resources that has attracted the attention and interest of the French administrative authorities.

to ensure that the documentary and historical research was not limited to previous publications, we relied mainly on Algerian, Tunisian, and French archival documents.

this study examines the minutes and reports of the Sénatus consulte on the forests of the Douars constituting the geographical area of Souk Ahras and the official bulletins of the government of Algeria to examine the forestry legislation.

it also seeks to discuss the impact of these laws on the inhabitants.

indeed, the forestry law of July 17, 1874, was the origin of considerable problems and setbacks on the residents.

in addition, we examined some documents related to this topic retrieved from the Tunisian national archives and from the French archive that outline the scope of the forest wealth in the studied area.
