This paper aims to study the epistemological structure of the concept of security in international relations, by presenting an analytical and critical reading of security in light of the cognitive perspectives that attempted to explain the security phenomenon.

the study concluded that traditional approaches, especially realistic theory, have become inadequate and unsuitable for understanding and interpreting many security issues in the post-cold war world, especially with regard to issues of identity, ethnic conflicts, and environmental security..
