The issue of identity and national unity occupied a distinct position in the discourse of reform leaders ; where scholars focused on reviving the national identity, and re-publishing it among the groups of Algerian society, reply to the colonial policy that worked to obliterate the national identity.

among those who addressed the issue of national identity is the writer and historian Ahmed Tawfiq al-Madani, who employed historical writing to confirm the Algerian national identity and respond to the suspicions of colonial writings.

he wrote a number of historical books, most notably the geography of the Algerian country, the book this is Algeria, the three hundred years' war between Algeria and Spain.
