Abstract EN

This paper aims to highlight the size and structure of foreign reserves in the Libyan economy.

It attempts to estimate the optimal size of these reserves by means of several indicators and criteria endorsed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In this regard, we estimated the optimal size of foreign reserves according to these criteria and the composite criterion developed by the IMF.

This criterion allows for modifications that takes into account the country-specific features.

Therefore, we developed the IMF’s composite criterion to consider the specific features of the Libyan economy.

Our study concluded that the monetary authority holds a level of foreign reserves that exceeds the optimal level recommended by the literature.
