Abstract EN

This study aims to introduce the era of Norman occupation in North Africa in general, and specifically in the city of “Ṭarābulus al-Gharb” ; “Western Tripoli” during King Roger II's reign.

this occupation lasted for less than a decade (1146_1154 AD).

and we used, based on our expertise, the descriptive historical method, relying on period sources, later references, and recent studies, some of which go into great detail about the conditions of the occupation and the city's situation after the Normans took control.

our findings indicate that the Norman occupation of certain cities in Maghreb, particularly Tripoli, was driven by economic and strategic motives, with religious motives playing a lesser role.

this is mainly because the city was engulfed in internal power struggles, which facilitated its occupation.

moreover, Roger II's policies in the cities he occupied did not significantly differ from their preoccupation state, except for the hostages taken by the Normans and the tribute imposed on Muslims.
