Algeria is considered one of the most important countries receiving refugees in the past and in modern times, not only as a transit area, but also as a region of stability.

Immediately after independence, refugees took it as their destination, safe haven and destination, especially for members of persecuted revolutionary resistance movements fleeing from the greed and grip of colonial forces, and now for all peoples who seek asylum because of Armed conflicts and other reasons that prompt a request for protection as a result of persecution, and in order to ensure the provision of protection for this group, Algeria hastened from the outset to ratify international and regional conventions on refugee affairs.

However, the successive Algerian constitutions until the 2020 amendment still limited recognized asylum cases to political asylum, despite the expansion of the scope of asylum cases stipulated in the ratified agreements.
