The research aims to identify changes in consumption spending patterns on the annual expenditure groups for the cereals and bread group in urban and rural Egypt by studying the relative importance of annual household spending for the main food expenditure groups in relation to spending on food and drink and total consumption spending.

the research relied on a descriptive and quantitative analysis method using different analytical statistical criteria to study the variation in consumption spending patterns and estimate spending functions using statistical models in their various forms and choosing the best statistically, as well as estimating the spending flexibility of the bread grain groups under study.

the group of grains and bread is one of the most important food commodities from more than one angle.

from the angle of nutritional value, it is considered that commodity that provides individuals with their needs of calories and vegetable protein.

the commodity ranked first in terms of average household expenditure, as it represented about 5.82% and 5.07% in rural areas, and about 4.29% and 6.76% in urban areas during the years (2015 / 2016, 2019 / 2020), respectively.

it was also found that the coefficients of spending and family size flexibility from the spending functions estimated for the group of grains and bread in urban Egypt during the years under study are all positive and less than the correct one (except for the size of the family in the year (2019 / 2020), as it is considered this group of goods is necessary for the consumer.

it also turns out that the effect of the change in family size on changes in the annual household consumption expenditure of the cereals and bread group is less than those effects related to the total annual consumption expenditure.

clear changes occurred in the consumption patterns of the group, cereals and bread, as a result of the presence of significant differences between the average consumption expenditure on the aforementioned commodity between urban and rural consumers on the one hand, and between various household budget researches on the other hand, and that these results can be used as economic indicators that help in setting special policies by improving the pattern of food consumption spending on this commodity in rural and urban areas in Egypt, and thus rationalizing consumption to increase savings and the ability of society to self-finance the economic and social development plan.
