In the past, the Zouaoua people settled in the mountains, and their villages were built on the tops of mountains and hills.

They are subject to a distinctive social order called "custom", which is the highest authority and constitution of the region.

Although the Ottoman Turks were able to enter the city of Dellys (Eflissen el-Bahr) at an early date (1517), the subjugation of the Zouaoua country was delayed until the 18th century, due to the harsh nature of the region.

In 1720, Ali Khoja succeeded in subduing the Amraoua tribes and founded the Makhzen tribes.

While the Zouaoua tribes in the mountainous regions of the Djurdjura remained independent and reluctant, despite the attempts of the Ottoman administration to subjugate them.
