يعد حق المؤلف من المفاهيم القانونية يستخدم لوصف الحقوق الممنوحة للمبدعين فيما يخص مصنفاتهم الأدبية والعلمية والفنية، وتشمل حقوق المؤلف حماية المصنفات، ويعد موضوع حقوق المؤلف أو ما يعرف بالملكية الأدبية والفنية فرعا من فروع الملكية الفكرية التي يقصد بمعناها الواسع الحقوق التي تنتج من الأنشطة الفكرية التي تشمل المصنفات.
فالأعمال الصحفية المبتكرة، تحمى ويطبق بشأنها ما يطبق على غيرها من المصنفات المحمية من الأحكام الواردة في قانون حق المؤلف، والتي تتمثل في حماية حق الصحفي وحماية المصنفات الصحفية.
