The representation of the others in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys’s wide Sargasso sea : a postcolonial reading

This study concentrates on two narratives, Jeans Rhys’s modern fiction “Wide Sargasso Sea” and the Victorian Bronte’s “Jane.

Eyre”.

This comprehensive analysis aims to recognize the overcritical fact of colonial history that gives touchy emotions about the colonial master’s sarcastic kindheartedness.

Rhys’s postcolonial novel was written in the Twenties Century, as a reaction to Bronte's narrative during the Victorian British colonial expansion when the nation's attention was diverted from the West to the East Indies region.

This novel donated to the colonial discourse for extensive reading and the unfavorable portrayal of the colonized other.

This work investigates the colonial subjects in both novels.

The analysis highlights the stereotypes of The Others that were developed by colonizers' agendas to support the notion of their inferiority.

Gender prejudice of settlers’ rhetoric behaviors is discussed also, the colonial norms assets and invaders’ legacy agendas discussed.

This study states the need for conducting a historical and cultural analysis of the literary texts of the colonizers.

Many readers are incapable to hold yet the extensive reading of the post-colonial norms in literary texts.
