Abstract EN

This study addresses the subject of identity in contemporary Omani novels.

The study investigated identity through the novel “Sajeen Al-Zurqah” written by the Omani novel writer Sharifah Al-Nobi.

The researcher used the descriptive analytical approach and applied the tools of cultural criticism.

The study came up with various conclusions; the most important of which are as follows: - The Omani contemporary novels presented the concept of identity as a remarkable social feature in the novel’s community.

- Identity is a resilient controversial concept subject to transformation and alteration according to time, place, and circumstances.

- There is the writer’s identity, the novel’s identity, and the identity of the novel’s characters, all of which are related to the factors of place and time.

- Identity is subjective at the individual level and collective at the comprehensive level.

- The Omani contemporary writer is a product of the environment they lived in; their experience and views are reflected in their narrations.

- The Omani contemporary writer does not show boldness while addressing the subject of identity as s/he did not provide freedom for the characters within the conflicts addressed, but rather constrained them by the society’s limitations.

- Open endings are a remarkable theme in the contemporary Omani novels.

- There are multiple narrative voices in the Omani contemporary novels that address the identity subject
