The present paper tackles an ambiguous and thorny issue, which is still a matter of hot debate among critics, literary figures, and psychologists : the origin or source if the poetic state (of mind).

while some attribute it to the idealist and romantic view of inspiration or the deporting external inspiration, others ascribe it to the poet's realistic experience his, self-consciousness and his mental processes.

this paper attempts to approach this problematic thought expounding and weighing up the different point of views that have addressed this issue.

the paper seeks also to develop a more valid and reliable stance that would overcome the weaknesses of the existing approaches.
