Abstract EN

This paper uses "fiscal space and public debt limits " approach to analyze the fiscal sustainability in Algeria, during the period 1990-2020, by estimating the fiscal reaction function using Fully Modified Least Squares method and threshold models.

In spite of the efforts made to rearrange the priorities of spending and incomes in Algeria, the results of the descriptive and econometric study were clear evidence of the state of fiscal fatigue and the decrease in the fiscal space available in Algeria.

The results also demonstrated the existence of a threshold level in the debt ratio (debt ceiling or fiscal cliff), approximately equal to 61.17%, above which Algerian fiscal policy makers are concerned with corrective actions to avoid insolvency.
