Allah’s wisdom dictates that disagreement among people constantly occurs, thus it is common for people to turn to scholars for guidance.

Scholars also strive to derive the laws of Shari’a through ijtihad (reasoning from Islamic rulings).

One of the most reliable ijtihad was that of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who used to refer to him to resolve their religious disputes.

After his death, the companions referred to the Ummahat Al Mu’minin (the mothers of the believers) and later, to the elders.

The companions’ followers also turned to them, and after their era, people turned to their followers.

Thus, Muslims have inherited this powerful method of resolving disagreements across different eras, cultures, and schools of thought.

One of the most prominent Imams to whom people returned to settle their disputes was Imam Malik.
