DAW) is one of the most controversial human rights conventions.

Several of the countries have ratified this treaty, although, the majority of Arab States have made reservations that exclude the applicability of CEDAW.

These reservations based on contradiction between any term of the convention and the norms of Islamic law or incompatibility with existing national legislation or with cultural relativism.

Thus, the reservation to this convention reflects conflict between international obligations imposed by universal human rights a particularly women's rights and the necessity to preserve national sovereignty and safeguard the State's religious and its cultural privacy.

Even though, Arab countries have achieved a set of gains to improve the status of women and their equality with men by adapting their legislation to the CEDAW standards.

However, their achievements are still few in terms of withdrawing reservations, under the pretext that many of the provisions of the convention are incompatible with Islamic law.
