Abstract EN

This study focused on discussing the issue of the architectural text based on the cultural semiotic theory of "Juri LOTMAN" in terms of : concept, structure, and interpretation.

It is an article that deals with the concept of the text in its general semiotic sense that accommodates verbal, artistic, literary and cultural creations; in order to show that cultural forms such as : painting, architecture, clothing, story, publicity, etc., they are cultural texts that are a texture of different functional semiotic sub-systems that interact and communicate with each other in order to formulate a complex artistic structure capable of producing a complete unified meaning, and perform an integrated harmonious function.

this study concluded that the architectural façade of the "Mezguida" palace- in terms of its constructive function is an organized artistic text consisting of a group of disparate elements intertwined with each other and with the textual whole as well, and at the same time- in terms of its semiotic function- a system of signs expressing ideas, objects, perceptions, beliefs, values, and knowledges, that cannot be separated from the identity of the semiosphere, and its common memory; because each architectural unit in the structure of the architectural text is a sign within a "secondary semantic structure" that is embodied in the studied architectural façade, this means that the architectural text- like the literary text- is a readable and interpretable creation.
