Abstract EN

This study examines what geography is, its historical evolution and its most important branches.

Geography's epistemological history has evolved in terms of foundations, curricula and tools; as well as in terms of concepts and functions.

In recent years, regional geography has emerged as a reaction to the inadequacy of general geography in its scientific approach and working tools.

In conjunction with the aforementioned statement; the region is the paradigm of the regional geography and what it stands for.

Thereby, regional geography has become a science with a view to understand and define the geographical phenomenon and outline its prospects.

The study followed two methodologies, a descriptive and a historical one in order to cover all the theoretical and epistemological aspects.
