The marine environment is extremely important as it is a principal source of biological, energy and mineral resources, but it has recently become threatened by various sources of pollution such as petroleum, factory waste, nuclear materials transported by ships, and other materials and products with dangerous properties.

accordingly, states around the world have recruited to confront or even attempt to control all forms of pollution by establishing international and national legal norms for the necessary protection of the marine environment, whether at the international, regional or internal level.

like other coastal states, Algeria's policy of protecting the marine environment is based on joining to international and regional conventions and enacting internal laws to contribute to reducing the pollution problem that had seriously affected the marine environment.
