The literary theory course is one of the most important philosophical and cognitive courses for bachelor students of literature as it is designed to give a thorough understanding of what literature is, its nature, elements and purpose.

students on the course are required to closely analyze different philosophies, concepts of knowledge and perspectives on literature and its importance.

the course is normally taught as a module of various Bachelor degree programmes.

this study examines the extent to which BA students at the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at King Abdulaziz University are equipped to succeed in the literary theory course offered as part of the department's curriculum.

the study focuses on two aspects, namely first of all on the likelihood of success-given the fact that required prior knowledge is taught in the fourth semester or even after the course, and examines the adequacy of the course description, vocabulary and subjects-and secondly on the challenges and problems for teachers and students in terms of fulfilling the requirements of the programme.

this study considers two scientifically recognized views of teaching literary theory in the context of the department's current curriculum.

the first view holds that teaching the course at an early stage of their studies provides students with specific knowledge that they require to study the remainder of their literature courses.

those who hold the second view believe the course should be taught at an advanced level once students possess sufficient knowledge and an appreciation of the different types of literary phenomena down various ages-at a stage in their university career where it can help them to study and sharpen their thinking in dealing with literature and its different philosophies.
