Abstract EN

The research studies the verb in linguistic context that contributes in specifying its syntactic tense.

a verb has two tenses : a morphological tense and a syntactic one that are attached to each other.

this study sheds light on the syntactic tense by clarifying its meaning and rooting it based on Arabic Syntax.

previously, syntactician examined the situations where verb indicated another tense according to the context as the verb is meaningless when extracted away from the context.

such meaning is called the "syntactic meaning" and is influenced by several factors that can be verbal or semantical.

Ibn Genni pointed to such situation when he wrote "and so is their saying : "in qumta qumtu" comes in the past tense while the meaning is that of the present tense.

being cautious about the meaning, he stated his utterance in the present tense that is uncertain to take place.

using a verb in the past tense to express the future comes a lot in the Holly Quran.

Part of the Arabs' syntax is expressing the past and the future in the same way they express the present intentionally to visualize it in the mind as if it was taking place at the time of the telling.

this study also links the theoretical aspect to the implicational one through the study of the poetry of Hassan ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him).
