The main goal of British policy after the end of World War II was to prevent the Soviet Union from monopolizing the European continent.

Therefore, British politicians stressed the need for Britain to interfere quickly and decisively in European affairs to prevent the Soviets from expanding into Western Europe, especially after its control over Eastern Europe and to seek for expansion towards the West.

Hence, Britain began to hold talks with the Benelux countries and France.

After ensuring the support of these countries along with Britain, the latter turned to the United States of America to obtain support from it.

Especially since the United States of America has the huge economic, political and military capabilities through which it can face the Soviet threat and its dominance over Europe.

In spite of the obstacles and difficulties that Britain faced during the Brussels Treaty negotiations, it succeeded in signing the Treaty of Brussels on the seventeenth of March 1948.
