If orientalism is the study of the image of the other, be it a Muslim, an Arab, or any of the non-Western peoples, then it is in its core meaning: "a vision of the other according to the self".

From this perspective, a number of Arab researchers approached the issue of Orientalism in their approach in particular, and the most famous of them was the Palestinian-born American researcher Edward Said in his book: Orientalism issued in 1978.

Before him, the Egyptian writer "Anwar Abdel Malik" distinguished himself in a famous article issued by him in 1963 entitled: Orientalism is in crisis.

Years later, Abdullah Laroui, in 1967, issued in his book Contemporary Arab Ideology a critique of the works of the Austrian orientalist "Gustave von Grunebaum", especially his cultural approach when studying Islamic civilization.

This trend is determined in the research and criticism of Orientalism, in a line defined by Edward Said when he mentioned his study of writings on the Orient as referring to those "whose countries of writers were associated with an imperialist project in particular." Which means that he is working on a section of Orientalism that is not separated from the representation of a colonial project.

This trend, in its socio-cultural significance, refers to the concept of "borders" in its civilized sense, and what it means from the "delimitation" lines that inhabit selves, ideas and imaginations.
