Abstract EN

Surgical intervention in cases of bone fractures often requires placing many plates, pieces and artificial joints made of metal alloys inside the body where the metal ions that make up the alloys can be released inside the body.

Our current study aims to assess the concentrations of nickel in the serum of 21 individuals who underwent surgeries that required implantation of metal bodies for more than a year, and they were distributed according to time into three groups at an interval of 4 months between each group.

The patient groups were compared with a control group of 21 healthy subjects.

The serum nickel was measured by a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a deuterium lamp.

The results of the research showed that there were statistically significant differences between the control group and the two groups of patients during the first and second period (P < 0.0001) while the results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the control group and the patient group during the third period (P = 0.429), A strong inverse correlation was found between serum nickel levels in patient groups as a function of time (r = - 0.928) as serum nickel concentrations decreased in patient groups over time.

We conclude from this study that there is a high leakage of nickel in patients who underwent transplantation of metallic bodies during orthopedic surgeries, especially in the first period of surgery then nickel levels decreased over time until they reached the natural limits after about one year.

Attention should be paid to nickel released from the joints and plates made of metal alloys inside the bodies of patients with orthopedic fractures in orthopedic surgeries and periodic checks should be done to monitor the levels of nickel and other metals in patients with orthopedic surgeries that require transplantation of metal objects.
