Since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq which radically reshaped it politically and economically, placing it under many structural challenges.

If the primary goal of the occupation, as the United States claims, is to establish a “democratic” Iraqi regime and promote liberal values in the region, then the process of democratic transformation in the country faltered due to sectarian conflicts fueled by the occupation, widespread corruption, and political competition.

The American occupation has tried to transform Iraq into the “neoliberal” model, which encourages privatization and liberalization of the economy, and opening markets to foreign investments and multinational companies, with the aim of integrating it into the global economic system subject to American hegemony.

This “neoliberal” model has exacerbated economic fragility and increased social problems in Iraq.
