لن نكتفي في هذا البحث برد مزعم شارل بالي وألبير سشهاي بأن دو سوسير كان يُمزّق ملحوظاته التي كان يحضر بها لدروسه في اللسانيات العامة التي ألقاها خلال السنوات الجامعية الثلاث (1907) و (1909-1908) و (1911-1910)، بل ستعنى أيضا بوصف مضامين الملحوظات التي باتت في متناول الباحثين ونقارنها، كلما تيسر ذلك، بمضامين كراسات الطلبة.
لكننا سنكتفي في هذا المقال من هذه الملحوظات بما يُعرف بالوثائق القديمة، أي بتلك التي حققها رودلف أنغلر ونشرها ضمن طبعته النقدية.

Anciens Documents", republished in 2002, in Ecrits de linguistique Générale by F.
de Saussure.
