Abstract EN

This study aims to explore the boundaries shaping the positions of Arab women, which are strongly evident in the private sphere as the primary site for the production of social, moral, and cultural norms that delineate women’s roles in the public sphere.

This is achieved through a comparison between the works of Fatima Al-Mernissi and Assia Jabbar.

Al-Mernissi’s works focus on what she termed the “harem institution” as a central political, historical, social, and intellectual concept in her works.

Regarding Assia Jabbar, this study focuses on the concept of the harem in her writings, highlighting her interest in documenting and recording the oppression women faced during wars and their struggles within it until independence.
