The international development association (IDA) was established as an international supporter for the developing countries and the least developed countries by supporting their multiple and varied projects on more accessible and acceptable terms if compared to dealing with the other financial institutions such as the international bank for reconstruction and development and the international monetary fund.

the IDA has been characterized by the effectiveness of its work towards the developing countries through the quality of projects and the quality of services provided by it which has been received with the approval of many international bodies.

it is also characterized by the remarkable cooperation with the rest of the institutions of the world bank group and the other international actors working in the same framework.

however, the hegemony of the United States of America and Britain over the financial shares, and consequently over the decisions of the institution, has made them often linked to the decisions and orientations of these countries.
