this principle, which emerged as an economic principle at first with the aim of making the polluter pay for the costs of pollution, is intended to safeguard the environment and achieve sustainable development.

the principle has gained legal recognition internationally, providing states with the capacity to take preventive actions and endorse environmentally-friendly practices.

in addition, it holds polluters accountable for correcting and compensating for any environmental damages.

as such, the polluter pays principle has been included in multiple international agreements and organizations, prompting states to enact it into their domestic legislation.
