The Syrian crisis is truly considered a real test for Turkey’s foreign policy within the framework of the idea of “strategic depth” that was introduced by Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoğlu after his justice and development party came to power in Turkey, where Turkey found itself forced to choose between its principles and its interests, and its behavior was distinct.

in dealing with the political transformations in the region with double standards, as Turkey saw that it was the first to be harmed by what is happening in the Levant, given that Syria is Turkey’s main gateway to the Arab world.

it is not unlikely that the Syrian crisis will eliminate Turkey’s ambitions to play the first roles in the middle east; it will also eliminate the thesis of “strategic depth,” the new axis of Turkish foreign policy in the era of justice and development.

the Turkish position on the Syrian crisis represented a fundamental opportunity for Turkey to test the theory of strategic depth and its return to the east, after a long period of severing relations with Arab countries and seeking to catching up with the West.
