Alexis Carrel is one of the most famous figures in both the medical and intellectual fields, known for his innovation in medicine with his Nobel prize on one hand, and for his intellectual contributions in the field of medical philosophy in particular.

this study assumes that Carrel distinguishes himself from his predecessors among scientists and physicians of the 19th century, as well as by the divergence of his ideas from theirs.

it adopts a descriptive and analytical approach to Carrel's ideas and positions, as well as his critical view of western modernity.

the results of this study confirm Carrel's critical stance towards modern western civilization, attributed to its development outside of human nature and its aspirations.

indeed, all attention has been focused on the material aspects of man, neglecting the immaterial aspects.

as a result, man has been estranged from himself and has lost the fundamental element he has always aspired to, happiness.

additionally, Carrel opposed the dominant materialistic and reductionist view of the cosmos and life in the 19th century, which favored the progress of material sciences at the expense of human aspects deeply rooted in human nature.

this approach marginalized the humanities in relation to the progress of physico-chemical sciences.

thus, Carrel emphasized the need to focus on the humanities and to consider material sciences as a means to serve them rather than an end in themselves.
