Abstract EN
Benin, having ratified the United Nations framework convention on climate change and its resulting agreements, including the Paris climate agreement, has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
the purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of economic growth on environmental quality in Benin, as measured by carbon dioxide emissions, using an autoregressive lagged scale model (ARDL) and annual data from the Word Development Indicator database (WDI, 2018), from the world bank, covering the period 1961-2014.
the results of the study indicate that in the short term, economic growth has no effect on CO2 emissions.
but in the long term a 1% increase in economic growth leads to a more than proportional increase of 3.97% CO2 emissions.
the effects of trade opening are positive in both the short and long run.
a 1% increase in the commercial openness rate leads in the short term to a 0.42% increase in CO2 emissions.
In the long run, the effect is 0.58%.
the density of the population in short-term, has no effect on CO2 emissions.
but in the long term, an increase in population density of 1% has the effect of increasing emissions proportionally (1%).
these results serve to strengthen the framework for design and analysis of development policies, in particular the policies for accelerating economic growth and those for the sustainable management of the environment and natural resources.
