Abstract EN

Admittedly, most studies that were concerned with the ottoman period of the Algerian history focused on the political aspect more than any other aspect, but that does not dismiss the existence of other sources that addressed the cultural and educational aspects.

there have been studies that praised the spread of education amongst various educational institutions such as Qur'anic schools, known as al-Katatib, al-Madariss, al Zawaya, and mosques that were common in urban and rural areas alike.

these institutions contributed to the dissemination of knowledge and simplified culture between the different segments of society to reduce illiteracy.

additionally, they helped in training a number of scholars and scientists that took charge of the religious syllabi and occupied educational jobs.

this article aims to examine the situation of education in Algeria during the ottoman era and study the diversity of the above-mentioned educational institutions and various programs as well as their role in reducing illiteracy.
