Abstract EN

T his paper sheds light on the origins and spread of Sufism in the city of Tripoli, where Sufi Turuqs )Orders( became a distinctive feature of this city and part of its rich history, especially the Sufi art, including Andalusian Ma’luf.

Several Sufi Turuq emerged in Tripoli, such as Al-Arousiyah, Al- Qadiriyya, Al-Shadhili, and others.

Over the centuries, hundreds of Sufi Sheikhs and eminent scholars contribued to spreading the sublime teachings of Islam.

Tripoli, like most of the cities of the Islamic world, knew Sufi teachings, and Zawiyas were established in the city to spread knowledge and education.

Sufi Zawiyas played a significant role in promoting social solidarity in all its forms, including by providing food, shelter, and other facilities for travelers, especially since some Libyan families lived outside cities and villages and continuously moved from one place to another in search of water and pasture for their animals.

T hey lived a purely nomadic lifestyle, with their sole activity being animal-breeding.

They had no land-cultivation activity that restricted their movement, so that they moved in limited groups to remote areas where rain and pasture were abundant, even outside the areas they considered to be their own property.

They might remain in these areas for a long time, even for years, without returning to their original dwelling place.

Sufi Zawiyas led many of the country’s inhabitants to settle in cities and villages.
