This article aims to study and research the basic drivers of conflict in the Mediterranean basin during the 16th century ad between the ottoman empire in the east and the Spanish empire in the west, as this conflict between the two prominent powers was tinged with a religious character between Christianity and Islam, which made each party seek to subjugate the other and control it.

this is done using multiple methods.

therefore, this research will specialize in studying the strategy of the western Christian side in the conflict represented by the establishment of the holy league in 1571 AD, as a religious alliance with military and economic goals that will work to mobilize the catholic Christian world to stand against the ottoman tide in the western Mediterranean.

the article also addresses the role played by pope Pius V and his religious discourse in establishing this league, leading to the most important results it achieved, specifically the second battle of Lepant.
